Macau's name is derived from A-Ma-Gau or Place of A-Ma and this temple dedicated to the seafarers' goddess dates from the early 16th century. 妈祖阁俗称天后庙，相传天后乃福建莆田人，又名娘妈，能预言吉凶，死后常显灵海上，帮助商人及渔民消灾解难，化险为夷，福建人遂与当地居民共同在现址立庙奉祀。
